Being "ready for AI" has little to do with buying a tool. It comes down to six things you can check yourself in an afternoon.

01

  • A specific problem: you can name one task that costs real time or money today
  • Usable data: the information that task needs exists and you can reach it
  • An owner: one person is responsible for the result, not just the tool
  • Data rules: you know what may and may not be sent to an outside service
  • A measure: you know how you will tell whether it worked
  • The people: the team who will use it has been asked, not just told
02

Most companies fail two or three of these, and that is normal. Each "no" is a cheaper problem to fix before an AI project than after it.

03

It rarely needs to be perfect. It needs to exist, be reachable, and be allowed to be used for the purpose. An assessment checks all three.

With one task, one owner and one measure. Avoid company-wide AI programmes until one use has proven itself.

The six checks in this article take an afternoon. A proper assessment of your data, tools and risks takes one to two weeks.

No. Readiness comes first: a clear task, data you can reach, a rule for what may leave the company and someone who owns the result. A tool bought before that usually goes unused.
